That kind of storytelling elegance is missing here. In Jaws, Spielberg's early masterpiece, viewers didn't get to see the shark until well into the movie - and the suspense was excruciating. Female characters are shown as strong and capable problem-solvers, but all of the lead characters are White and the only one who isn't thin is used as comic relief. The film shows how teamwork, determination, and intelligence can help you survive the most dangerous situations.
